holiday leave
« on: November 17, 2009, 09:53:11 AM »
i was just wondering if there was an actual written rule stating employees cant request leave during holidays?? or did someone just decide it would be another fun way to screw over all the little aafes peons?

The "new rule" is that there are no guarantees about getting leave around the holidays off if requested. Of course that isn't an offical Aafes rule or policy it's just something that the management thought up on the spot to make sure that they would have people working for the holidays.
I put in my holiday leave request two months in advance and my managment told me no right off the bat.  After that comment I told them that my husband and I already invested thousands of dollars into it (plane tickets, reservations to board our animals, etc.) My immediate manager told me that she was going to approve it anyways because she understands the importance of family rather than the job,  but I'm still waiting for higher managment to say no.

There is NO written rule. Management just decided that they would keep people from taking leave because too many people supposedly wanted time off. Of course, they forget that people will call in sick instead, using sick leave that counts against the bottom line.

Our "sick" numbers go up double digits during the holidays. Of course, that means that the stores end up short of personnel and they have to scramble to cover those shifts.

well after 4 years im still stuck in the lovely intermittent position because i prefer to actually see my children so i dont get any kind of paid leave. i have already had to fight with a manager to get thanksgiving day off. that was fun. they had me working and all the new people were off. now i get to fight about xmas eve just so my kids can have so sort of normalcy.

Not shoppettes, hope she doesn't have to work in one of those hellholes.
Do onto others as they would do onto you.

Another thing, Aafes has a military attitude. " If we wanted you to have a family, we would have issued you one."
Do onto others as they would do onto you.

No military does have a bit better attitude than that, they(military) have been pushing more"family time" than what many relize.

Many post have started changing work hours/work days to make sure soldiers have and spend more family time.So no Aafes has this attitude all on their own.

the store I work for was closed thanksgiving, open on Christmas eve and closed Christmas day. it's not a shoppette either. however, i am thinking this had more to do with there won't be any business so we might as well be closed. it also seems to me that intermittent people tend to get the paid holidays off but never the other ones. at least that's what it feels like to me.  :o

Always two sides to this.

The unwritten rule where I work is first come...first served. Everyone can not be off at the same time. Its a simple fact of coverage. Personally, I do not like having more than 1 person off in the entire Area; however, I have always allowed at least one person off from each department. I even allow some associates to crossover and allow two folks off from the same department but that puts extra strain in coverage.

I think I have been more than fair to the hard working folks that I work with.

How magnanimous of you... and how wrong on all counts.

First-leave is an earned benefit that cannot be denied. If you don't have the coverage, it is not an excuse to keep people from using their leave.

Second-look in the contracts about system seniority and all that where leave is concerned. It is NOT "first come, first served".

Third-you speak of the people you work with as if they were pets. Very condescending.

Leave has to be requested and approved by supervisor.

Don't bother to play that old chestnut.

Yes, leave must be approved, but in a situation where people cannot carry unlimited time over, it is not proper policy to keep someone from using their leave in order to NOT forfeit it. We had people lose leave because it kept being denied due to BS reasons like people quitting or whatever.
