Employees forced to stay in Kuwait
« on: January 20, 2010, 05:45:00 PM »
I'm new to this site but I wanted to pass on some info I just got.

I talked to my gf this morning. She made it back to Kuwait from Afghanistan late last night. There is a group of around 100 that are heading back to the states. Only half have made it to Kuwait so far. They are waiting on the other half. The 50 or so in Kuwait are being told they have to wait until Sunday to fly back. AAFES wants the entire group to travel at once. Ok, no problem I can understand that. However, the 50 or so that are in Kuwait are being told they have to take vacation time for the next 5 days or not get paid.  If they try and book and earlier flight, they will be written up for insubordination.

Tell her to try and get that order on tape (cell phone recording etc) and/or the written paperwork or email.

There are to many legal things wrong with that but it has to be proved

I will pass that along.  With 50+ people in the group maybe she can at least get names of the people she is with.  1 vs 1 is tough to prove.  1 vs 50 is a home run

Tell her to have whomever said that to put it in writing, or she's going to take an earlier flight.  Make sure she makes the request in writing as well.

I was on the same "volunteer" mission your girlfriend was on, no one was told they had to use leave, they were given the choice to either work for the time they were there or take leave, why should someone get paid for doing absolutely nothing.

To give someone the choice to work or take leave because you failed to plan properly is stupid.  If they were on hold at their deployed location, fine, but they weren't.  They were enroute to a new destination and the planning went to shite.  That problem is all AAFES, so therefore, AAFES should be paying ALL persons stuck there 40 hr weeks.  Whether they were full time employees or not is irrelevant since they were on full time hold.
