Is AAFES really a non profit organization?
« on: November 17, 2009, 12:57:02 PM »
AAFES likes to tout that they are a non profit organization, and that they give any 'profits' they make to MWR, for our benefit.  But, they really don't distribute money to any shareholders, but they do hire a lot of very highly paid ex officers at their Dallas facility.

I think that getting a high salary, is as good as getting a shareholder distribution, and it can hidden in the general ledger as an operating expense.

A cute trick huh?
When you pay peanuts, all you can hire are monkeys.

Well, I love AAFES as much as I hate it.  I think that some of the people I work with are amazing, and most of my customers are the best.  The company itself is nonprofit, and yes, salaries must be expended before profits are declared in most cases.  I guess I'd want the heads to make pretty good salaries... wouldn't you?  Idk, I guess it depends on just how much they're making.  If we applied that much scrutiny to our congressmen whoo buddy.  But this isn't the website for me to get into that :)

ugghretail, I have to say that I really do not want the senior managers to make a fortune. Many moons ago, AAFES was run like  NEXCOM with military in charge above a certain level in all slots involving "profit". That meant there were no temptations to pad salaries and personal bottom lines by cutting elsewhere. Now, with the unfair bonus program in place, there is way too MUCH temptation to slash/burn at the lowest level to make the numbers look good and to be quite sure that the big bosses get the biggest bonuses. Having a general at the top is so much window dressing because I would bet he hasn't ever gotten near any employee without a dozen managers running interference.

I love *most* of the people I work with and even like some of the managers enough to call them "friends". But still... I know that self-preservation is the key word for all interaction these days.

The real problem is when we let worthless Executives retire for the HQ and than bring them on as contractors to the same job that all they did was walk our HQ hallways with the ever famous glazed stare. That is where the REAL waste come from....
