No, NOT all stockers work the midnight shift. (our stockers don't) and there is not, to my knowledge, any directive saying it is a global rule.

If you have child care issues, management is supposed to work with your schedule. But, they do (at least under U.S. law) have the right to assign work and schedule. They do not have the right to lie about the reasoning, though.

I know that you are C&T, but you might think about changing to another position in the store that IS daytime.

It is just this kind of crap thinking by the highers-up that makes my blood boil and has me spouting off. Why is there such a need for management to make up such bull$h!t lies in order to screw with the backbones of the organization (the workers)?

You are wrong...as long as proper notice is given a work schedule can be changed

Check your contract before you say "wrong". If you fall under a CBA, there cannot be any more than two schedule changes in a month. In fact, in the main contract, the same section that says no frequent schedule changes also mentions management working with their employees to accommodate child care, etc.

I work as a Stocker in CONUS.

I am currently on daytime, but I have worked graveyard shift for about a year.  I would love to go back to it.  Here's why:
  • 10% Shift Differential.
    No customers in the store.
    No managers in the store.
    A relaxed work environment.
A very tight relationship with your co-workers.
Daytime freedom, to get a 2nd job, go to school, relax, etc.

Forget it. You, as a manager, should know from the basic labor relations WBL course that any union contract supersedes EOPs.
