Getting Fired
« on: March 20, 2010, 12:11:02 AM »
What is up with AAFES? They are cutting hours like crazy here. This is what I don't understand, how can you be terminated and asked to work for 7 more days? What kind of S--- is that. NOt only was I terminated but terminated because I missed 3 days of work during my probation period (Which I Had Dr.'s Notes For Each Day) and was late in a few times. Why are we given sick leave if we can't use it? The other thing I don't get is why hire someone new if you know that hours are going to be cut!!!! I always thought last one in is the first one to go! Not in this case, I was let go and had been there longer but had 2 other people that I worked with that have been there for several years and the new person is getting the better treatment (Favoritism) and the hours and we were all cut! Well I was cut completely!!!! I guess when you speak your mind and let people know how you feel just gives them more reason to fire you!!! I honestly believe I was fired for speaking my mind and for standing up for myself and of course because our facility is sucking right now for sales and hours are being cut. I guess I didn't kiss enough butt to stay there. I am so sorry but I can't reach my own a-- so I am definitely not kissing managements. One more thing, the manager I was working for has had several complaints against her from others but yet she is still working there!!! As far as the store manger is concerned she doesn't believe anything is wrong and continues to take her side after people have complained numerous times and quit because of her! Something is not right!!

Are you INT, RFT? Have you ever been counseled for your lateness? Where they have you is that probationary period. You were supposedly told that you could be let go at any time before your six months are up.

But, yes--they have to give you seven days' notice and that is why they asked you to keep working. One thing--is your official dismissal for "lack of work"? That would be hard to fight if you wanted to sue, especially if you work in an "at will" state. But you would be able to get unemployment.

That's what I said.

The sick days should not have been an issue IF they were approved. You cannot "abuse" something if they approve it.

The lateness might be the issue, if the employee didn't call in to let the supervisor know they were running behind.

A lot of times, management will over-hire and use the probationary period to "test" their choices. It sucks, but that is another result of a poor management ethic.

They always told me my work ethics were great and that I was a good worker. Never had an issue with that! The being late part was never more than 5-8 minutes if that, so I never called in and said I was running late. They told me that my flexability and avaliablitly wasn't working out. I called in sick 3 times with Dr.'s excuses and was late a few time and was counseled . Also had a meeting with my manager and the store manager and asst. manager and was told I needed to improve and not to call in during my probation period. Since that meeting I haven't been late once or called in but I was still let go. So that is pretty F------ up I think! How can you tell someone to improve but don't give them the oppurtunity to do so. If they were going to fire me they should of just done it that day instead of waiting a month. Other than the callins and the being late I never did anything else wrong. Everyone gets sick and I have 3 children too. Everyone is late now and then espically when you live in a place that you get snow! The road conditions were the cause of a few of my tardys but other than that there wasn't anything else wrong. I was a regular Part Time Employee. Started out at about 36 hours a week than was cut down to 20 after the holidays and inventory because they hired someone new.

I'm blunt, and will probably upset you, but I deal with AAFES HR all the time and let me tell you how it is.

You were on probation. With or without a doctor note they could have fired you the first time you missed or were late. The point of view of the head HR god in charge at HQ is of the mind that if you think it's possible you might be late, you leave early. If you don't think you will have a ride for the next day, then you sleep in the parking lot. I mean, he does not believe in missing work AT ALL without it being preapproved, so that is the general thought process among management. Of course they hire more people than they need. Any good management team will, so they can weed out the people that aren't going to have the ethic they need. Works that way at HQ, too. The seven days is something that was negotiated with the union, so that you have a bigger paycheck and a chance to send out resumes during that week and still be earning a paycheck. It may seem insulting, but it's one of the more fair and compassionate things AAFES agrees to. You say there was favoritism and you don't kiss butt. Well, there are consequences to that train of thought. Obviously. There are ways to use the system to accomplish your goals, but you chose to "speak your mind"...that's fine, but it's probably what lost your job. There are always ways to get your way and not lose your job and not kiss butt. The system is there to use, and if you don't use it, that's your own fault.

They are required, by law to give 7 days termination notice.  I don´t know how long you worked there, but they seemed to be lenient to you in the first place.  I doubt if they had more people than were authorized on the staffing pattern, unless it was temp hires for Xmas.  Any job has a probation period and that is when you try to make the first impression.  You didn´t make a good one.  Consider that all the times you were late or sick during the probation period, one of your co-workers had to do your job, and probably did not get paid for it .
Please don´t get me wrong.  I hate Aafes more than McCarthy hated commies, but this is work ethics, Nuff said.
Do onto others as they would do onto you.

Everyone's hours, if they were INT or RPT, had their hours cut after the holidays because no one has that much money to spend.

The lateness was an issue and, even if you DID improve, there might well have been others who did better. Either that, or someone up the food chain decided that a position in your area was excess. Since you were still in probationary status, you unfortunately drew the short straw.

One thing you didn't mention--did they put a reason on your notice? If it says "lack of work", you can collect at least a little bit of unemployment.

Got hurt, off work, came back, fired. No notice, nothing, just fired. Close to end of probation period so they did it while they could. You would think this would not happen at AAFES but it does, all the time, and there seems to be nothing to stop it or no recourse. Shame really. Spent lots of $$ on reruiting, hiring, sending you to training, airfare, motel bills, cost of TDY, all that down the drain. That practice should be stopped. I was never even told I was on a probationary period!
